The Old Scholar's Historical Thoughts

Beautiful Web Sites

I love graphs, maps, and the display of data. (Yes, I am a geek.) I acutally own the Tufte books and use them at work – that tells you how much of a geek I am. Anyways I thought the article about “Web Page Design Inspired by Edward Tufte” would be a lot more substantial than it was. There is a lot to be learned in the display of data and the web interface does change that. One question he brought up was “Should a site be beautiful to be effective?” Clio 2 had us read the article “Attractive Things Work Better”(PDF version opens in new window) which delves into some research on why people like pleasing presentations.I think that is why we were all initiallly attracted to the Cold War site during class. It’s something to think of when we work on our projects.

  1. Thanks for the link and information. It reminds me of a study I saw on one of those “news” shows about how kids thought their “attractive” teachers were nicer than the less attractive ones – even though they acted the same. Sad, but a reality. It is good to keep that in mind for our websites.
